Ove Arup asked me to photograph their work on the Hitachi GWR Stoke Gifford rail terminal. It took place in the middle of June when the day was long and dusk didn't start till gone 9pm. This was a perfect time as the the depot only gets busy then with trains arriving for maintenance and cleaning. Strict health and safety guidelines had to be adhered to, there was a lot of high voltage electricity close overhead! The client wanted movement and people in the photographs which I achieved, as well as capturing the magical twilight that occurs at dusk
Just some of the eighty five people I photographed in just one day. Hercules JV is a massive construction project in Wiltshire. My brief was to capture the real character of the people working on the project.
A makeshift studio with lighting was created on the site. People just kept arriving so I only had a few minutes with each one. At the end of an exhausting day I counted eighty five had been in front of my lens, which was a record for me.
The Bridge from Simon Doling on Vimeo.
An old bridge over the very tidal River Avon in Bristol, UK. Now its use is limited to pedestrians and cyclists. Designed by John Lysaght & Company, when the bridge was opened in 1906, it had two decks, rail tracks on the lower level and road traffic on the upper deck level. Its hard to see now but this bridge swung horizontally from the middle pier, very frequently to allow boats to continue up the river. There was also a high tower over the central pier to operate the swing section. The last swing was in 1936 and when the new road bridge, seen in his film,...

Located in Plymouth, this iconic headquarters building was designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw CBE, to reflect Plymouth’s maritime heritage, being in the form of a ship. The building was completed in 1993 and received a Royal Institute Of British Architects Award in 1994. Originally designed as offices and a print facility for a regional newspaper, times have moved on in the that business and the buildings owners are looking for a new user of this still striking example of modern architecture. Vast empty floors once busy with huge printing presses and the office spaces...

A Summers Day At Duckpool. It was one of those days that will linger in my memory. A friend of mine Specs, showing off his diving talents and taking off on some close call waves! This beautiful stretch of Cornish coast is not usually packed with surfers. Hopefully the rocks will keep it that way.
